The MOPC Board

"1945, The founding of the MOPC"

The year was 1945…Manila was a city of ruins and rubble. A battle had just taken place between the panic-stricken Japanese Imperial Army versus the American forces under General Douglas MacArthur. The Second World War was coming to an end.

It was at this time that Time-Life photojournalist Karl Mydens was stationed in Manila. Together with other American correspondents, he was assigned to cover the last stages of the war. He entered the battered gates of the University of Sto. Tomas Concentration Camp, and looked around what was left of the Tent City. As he walked on, he chanced upon a tent, which had three emaciated and weak foreigners inside it. But unlike other tents, Mydens stopped to look inside this one because he thought he saw someone he knew. As he came closer, he realized it was Dave Sternberg, a radio commentator, and David Bugoslav, editor of the Manila Times. Upon seeing them, Mydens exclaimed, "My God, it’s Dave!" He immediately sat down and shook hands with them and said, "It’s Dave! This has got to be the MOPC!"
